In Cod We Trust
Our evening was spent drinking and driving. Luckily this was encouraged at A4Cade. A late night video game arcade, serving cocktails and very strong beers.
As well as the games and drinks, we also had a DJ mixing various hits, mostly from the 90s. Which suited us fine. I’m not sure everyone else there was even born in the 90s. Although there was a strict over 21 policy.
Waking surprisingly early we set off to walk the Freedom Trail. We don’t rush though as we think at 2 and a half miles it won’t take much of the day.
We have trouble finding the Friendly Toast, so already end up doubling back on ourselves.
Vic opts for the ‘Donut Stop Believing’ whilst I have the ‘Barbacoa’ beef sandwich. Both served with a hearty helping of home fries.
Stomachs full we head to the start of the Freedom Tail. Which actually takes us back to the scene of the duckling day yesterday. It’s more subdued today, despite plenty of tourists getting ready to follow the trail along with us.
First stop is the State House. (Not the Steak House as I keep calling it). A gold domed grand building which hosts the state of Massachusetts government. It teases it’s tour, self guided or not, will feature an infamous cod and reveal what lies under the Dome.
We start the tour ourselves, visiting the opulent surroundings, featuring various tributes to America’s great politicians, think statues of George Washington and paintings of Abraham Lincoln. And lots of flags
Upon reaching the room for the house of representatives we pick up the guided tour. Just in time to hear about the sacred giant cod that hangs in the room. The room houses 160 politicians, who must meet here every 3 days. Tradition also states they can not meet without the cod been present. This cod has been stolen in the past (with students from Harvard blamed) and now there is tight security to ensure they don’t have to worry about that happening and can instead actually get some proper work done. The tour ends in another grand room where we can wear hats or take pictures. The state senate is about to meet. We do find the answer to the Dome question. It’s another fish hanging from the ceiling dubbed the ‘Holy Mackerel’. They like their fish here.
We the spend the rest of the morning walking the trail. Which is a very literal trail marked by a line of red bricks along the way. Various sights a long the way highlight the history of the founding of the USA that we know today. Burial grounds of people such as Samuel Adams, not as it turns out just a beer and various other monuments and historical buildings.
Lunch is a quick slice of pizza at Quincy Hall. This was actually Vic’s choice after being a bit overwhelmed by all the various eatery’s. We did sample the ‘Clam Chowda’ but that actually underwhelmed.
By now we think we must be nearing the end of the trial. We started around 8 and it’s gone lunch time.
We actually finish around 6pm. Between then and the end we have walked for what seemed like much more that 2 miles. We make it at least 8 miles. Some of this was walking the 294 steps to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument. Everyone we met was out of breath at the top. We ended the trial at the site of the USS Constitution. Although we could not board the boat today.
Instead we board the water shuttle back into the centre of Boston. At the harbour we spot the tour boat Codzilla. Hopefully we will try that another day.
Once we recover we brave the rain which has now set in to visit ‘The Top of the Hub’. Sitting at floor 52 of the Prudential Center. One floor higher than the viewing platform ‘skywalk’ we spend the evening sipping cocktails, listening to a live jazz band and enjoying the views of the city.
