Today This Could Be The Greatest Day Of Our Lives

Waking up with sore feet, our breakfast trip is to CVS to buy foot related supplies and some US ‘candy’ Inspired by Koo Koo Kanagroo throwing some into the crowd last night and it being mentioned several times I try the ‘Whoopers’. Turns out these are just slightly harder versions of Malteasers.

It’s another rainy day in Boston and we don’t really feel like walking much. We get a Lyft down to the Quincy Market area and spend some time browsing the shops. Picking up a few souvenirs, including a bottle of hot sauce from Pepper Palace. A shop dedicated to hot sauce with shelf’s full of them. All can be sampled, so after a good few samples I decide on a banana pepper sauce. We sensibly decide not to try the sauce which requires you to sign a waiver before trying.

For lunch we end up at our ‘last resort’ or ‘Dicks Last Resort’ to be exact. When we are seated our waitress explains the concept behind the name ‘we are obnoxious on purpose’. Once we get the hang of it it proves to be one of the most enjoyable meals of the trip so far. We earn the nickname ‘England’ with the waitress shouting it repeatedly at us. We don’t mind as she keeps bringing beer when she does.

I decided to brave some seafood with Lobster and Crab Mac and Cheese. Vic opts for wing and ribs. The waitress comments ‘disgusting’ when I ask for hot sauce to go with mine

In the end our waitress warms up to us a bit. When the bill comes I spot her Beatles T-Shirt, after she has mocked us earlier about The Freedom trail and the history surrounding us Brits. She admits her love of the band, although says it’s the only good thing we ever did. At the time I find it hard to disagree.

We leave Dicks with 2 free glasses (I don’t know why, she just gave them to us) and a recommendation for 2 mini golf courses for our trip to Cape Cod.

For dessert we grab a ‘Boston Cream Pie’ from a place in the market and find a seat outside. It’s still raining but luckily we find one with an umbrella. In-between we happen to catch a street performer. Sitting on the floor with various pots and pans, and armed with a couple of sticks. He puts together an entertaining show, stopping only to shout ‘I made some money’ or ‘I told my sister I wasn’t crazy’ when he gets a donation.

We head back to the hotel just as the heavens open, so it’s another Lyft to get us back. Just in time to rest up for the evening.

Heading to House of Blues, we now have not only Frank Turner fans but Red Sox fans as well. With the House of Blues sitting directly across the road from Fenway and the Red Sox playing the Astros tonight.

But of course we are here for Frank Turner. Another amazing night is spent watching 8 bands across the 2 stages. Drinking a few beers in our newly purchased beer koozies. (There’s a distinct US vibe to the merch for this tour)

We are celebrating 10 years of Frank’s album ‘Poetry of the Deed’ Which also happens to be around the time we discovered his music.

Tonight has many unique moments from the rousing sing along to Franks ‘Sons Of Liberty’ which of course was the group that lead the fight against the British rule (See the Boston Tea Party for more on that) to his cover of Take Thats ‘Greatest Day. He explains that he recorded this cover for Radio 1 Live Lounge as he had to cover a song in the Top 40 at the time. He also explains for the rest of the world who Take That are. It turns out many people love his cover and thought it was an original song.

The news may well be new to a lot of the crowd. But it doesn’t dampen the sing along. With a sold out crowd at the House of Blues, it might be the biggest Take That sing along that’s ever happened in the US.

Show 2341 done. We grab our second meal of the day at Wendy’s and head back to the hotel to rest before doing it all again tomorrow.
