Dogs and Elephants Only Watering Hole

Dogs and Elephants Only Watering Hole

A morning run starts our day, as we rise in Cambria. Its our coldest start at 7am by the coast, California does not get warm until the sun rises.

Our early start is rewarded by at least one unusual sight. A group of dolphins is clearly visible as we approach the sea. We may have also seen a sea otter, but they prove to be rather elusive.

The wildlife spotting continues during our drive along the coast and the ‘Big Sur’. A large group of Elephant Seals are lounging at one of the many ‘Vista Points’ dotted along this scenic drive.
The drive to Carmel By The Sea should only take a couple of hours, if driven with no stops. But that would be missing the point. We stop many times to take in the stunning views, as we drive through the mountains by the sea.

As we continue the drive, there is a stark reminder of the downside of  California’s dry weather. There are many signs stating the various forests and state parks are closed, along with many signs thanking firefighters for their hard work in tackling the forest fires that have plagued the area recently.

Despite the costal setting, water is also scarce here, with signs at one of the stops along the way stating the tap water is recycled and not to be drunk. Although a watering hole is provided for any elephants or dogs you may have.

Most of the day is spent driving and stopping for photos. The drive is fun though, winding up and down through the mountains. It feels almost like we have travelled back to England at times, with some very misty views, blocking the usual sunny skies. But then these don’t last for long, as you turn a corner and the mist  gives way to the more expected sunny skies and another perfect view.

We enter Carmel by the Sea, and Hotel Carmel where we will get a final rest before the more frantic pace of San Francsico.

I’m writing the blog post in the hotel’s lobby, where free wine tasting is offered, we are both enjoying a glass of Californian Pinot Nior.
